The Union Budget 2025 brings some great news for gig workers! For the first time, there’s a strong focus on giving them proper recognition and social security benefits. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced new plans to help gig workers—like issuing special ID cards and making it easier for them to register on the e-Shram portal. This also includes giving them access to health insurance under the PM Jan Arogya Yojana. These steps aim to support and protect over 1 crore gig workers across different sectors.
What’s the Social Security Scheme for Gig Workers?

While presenting her eighth budget, the Finance Minister highlighted how important gig workers are in today’s fast-moving, service-based economy. To recognize their work, the government will now help them get registered on the e-Shram portal, which will serve as a national database for gig workers.
They’ll also be covered under the PM Jan Arogya Yojana, one of the world’s biggest healthcare programs.
